Duncan Riley and Richard Giles talk with Markus Frind from Plentyoffish.com, the largest free dating site in the world with over 15 million pageviews a day.
Markus is a one man show, earning $10,000 a day from Google’s Adsense. In fact, he mentioned after the show that that number is now dated. We discuss his business, how he runs it on only several Window’s systems (Microsoft’s perfect advertisement), Adsense, SEO’s getting into web sites development, his web design (or lack of), and the normal question about whether it’s a good time to start a web business.
Apologize upfront. I’m still stunned at his success, so I spent most of the conversation sounding as such, and Duncan was under the weather with a sick child at home, so he was a little distracted. There was also a strange echo on the line, but you get the gist.

It may sound like a lot of money, but he is doing 15 millions pageviews a day, so the conversion is not very high. I know sites doing this amount of pages in three months instead of one day, but getting aroung 10 times more money.

I wish I was earning $10k per instead of a few cents!

[...] Yes all these thoughts were running through my head after listening to the 2WebCrew Podcast with Plenty of Fish’s Markus Frind. This podcast was one of the most boring podcasts ever. No offense Duncan. It was more like a conversation at the bar. But that’s alright I still learned a lot. Markus Frind wanted to keep everything a secret which is fine but why have a podcast if your going to say I can’t comment on this every five minutes. The truth of the matter is 80% of what ugly people do to win dates is a mystery to them, they try to cloud this in an air of mystery. This has never fooled me. Just like ugly sites. Sometimes you stumble onto success but you don’t know the answers to why. Well for the first time ever you are going to find out what the answers to these and other valuable secrets. Do you want to be as rich as Markus Frind ? Do you want to bang the hottest chicks? (figuratively speaking — I’ve heard the hotties actually have a higher ration of STD’s so I stick with the ugly ones) Do you want to the be net’s next zillionaire? Of course you do. And if you send me 19.99 in a SASE I promise you I will reveal to you the secrets you’ve been dying to know. Just kidding. [...]

May 5th, 2006 at 6:26 pm
Yes, I wish he could’ve revealed a little more of his “secrets”, but nonetheless it was inspiring. Anything is possible with the internet! With a little (or a lot) of hard work, patience, and perserverance, it can be done :)

Outstanding interview - There iwill always be naysayers. Sme think he should have revealed more; The truth of it is in the building and maintenance (not much) of a valuable, content driven site. Markus simply explains the reality of this to the world. A vibrant person; a killer niche and the power of traffic to content is what it is all about. I am certain he could take a few minutes and improve his click-through, but this goes to show the world what the average person with a not so average site can do. Awesome!

I listened with fascination to Markus Frind’s success story. I am very proud of him as it wasn’t long ago he was a candidate for me in my sybersearch recruiting business. He was someone I placed some years ago. I am now the student as I have earned all of $3.07 in Adsense earnings since I began in March 2006. I can only dream of $10K a day but would be over the moon with that per month. Way to go Markus!!

People asked about other affiliate programs….
http://www.plentyoffish.com/aff.jpg
Creating a free adult dating site and upselling to adultfriendfinder.com or Sexsearch.com would make you a billionaire, and that is no exaggeration. I make good money off it and have next to no adult traffic nor do i want it.
As for question of free vs paid, a free dating site will only make a small fraction of the money a paid dating site makes. I’m not sure of the exact amount but its under 1%. Most free dating sites will barely break even if they are lucky. The problem is no one else has figured out how to dramatically reduce the cost of the infustructure.

Markus doesn’t offer a shred of proof for his grandiose and unbelivable claims. And he doesn’t mention his draconian management style that causes huge turnover among members. POF members only last a few months at best after being insulted by Markus, his lackey moderators and his 4 pages of rules and regulations. Wish him luck, he needs it.
July 11th, 2006 at 10:26 pm
actually mike, he has posted photos of some of his adsense cheques for $800,000 up on his site so… I think that buys a lot of luck. And I don’t think he exists to prove anything to you.
July 24th, 2006 at 8:30 pm
Very nice work of Markus he made a site and made some money, true or not about the 10k he gets every day
I also made a site to get in contact with people, date,… all by myself called Me Tarzan You Jane http://www.MeTarzanYouJane.eu
And no I’m not a company, and yes I also started this to learn some aspx. I normally programmed asp but wanted to change to a newer more powerfull language.
The site has it’s share of members in Europe but the rest of the world can also follow now because everything is translated in english.
So guys and girls if you want some real honest site, no fake entries, blogs on the internet just real stuff then support me and sign yourself and your friends up. All free.
Not happy, then contact me via the site and let me now what bothers you and most of the time in the past after hearing something I also implemented new wishes or enhanced the site.
