I’m not alone!

I doubt many people are going to be replacing their DVD’s with Blu-Ray or HD DVD I know I don’t plan to. Unless I think HD experience is going to markedly improve the experience then upscaling DVD players will be fine. I will however tend to buy new discs in HD format to get best experience I can from them.

Mind you… in 1995 I told the owner of my local video rental store in Camberwell, who was converting to DVDs, that he should close up shop because it was all going on the net. :-)

Re the Bravia vs the Touch, how much better can it possibly be? Tell me how much more you enjoy a film or TV show on the Bravia than you do on the Touch? 100% more enjoyment? 50% more enjoyment? 25%? 10%?

I can’t imagine how much better The Godfather would be on a Bravia over a Touch playing six inches away from my face. On a cinema screen - ok. On a TV on my wall, I can’t see it.

Your other argument may have basis except for 1 fact and that was brought up by everyone and that is bandwidth. In Aus unless you live in city areas you don’t have access to ADSL2+, though that may change with last weeks announcement by Govt, and a lot are lucky if they can get 1.5mbps adsl. You cannot maintain a digital lifestyle on those speeds if you want everyone to ditch discs and go to digital downloads. The one advantage with discs if once you have it you can watch it right away. how long will it take to download a hi-def film on a 1.5mbps connection. Also a lot of people can’t afford it.

Maybe in the 15-20 years when digital is all you can get and there is unlimited speed and bandwidth discs will die out but not until then.

As for everyone switching - I remember saying on the show that, yes, it will take time. The whole download/rip side of things is still too clunky for most. But my argument is that people STILL shouldn’t be investing in dead technology (ie bluray) when it’s OBVIOUS that we’re moving quickly to an online distribution model with a hard drive as the storage. I would rather see the every geek telling people “No! Don’t buy that new DVD player! You’re wasting your money! Don’t buy that big screen! It’s DEAD TECHNOLOGY.”

It’s like buying the latest horse-drawn cart in 1910. Sure - cares were clunky. But they were obviously the future.

Either Cam has never really watched HD content on a big screen or that eye surgery he had a while back made his eyesight worse. I am not sure which it is but he is obviously delusional.

I think Cam is also wrong about everyone switching to watching content on mobile devices. Everyone seemed to disagree with him but he is adament that it is happening now and it isn’t. It will happen but it won’t be for another 10-15 yrs when the current generation of up and coming geeks become the majority. Cam just amazes me sometimes with his delusions about the future and fast it is happening
